Let's Talk about Libby...

I promised you details of a fund-raising challenge, and I'm delighted to introduce you to Libby Pardoe.....

Libby's younger brother George has played for Bashley ( Rydal) Junior Cricket Club since he a tiny U9. He is now a strapping U15, representing Hampshire within their U15 and U16 squads, training with their emerging player programme, and of course, is now playing for Bashley, this year mainly in the 3rd Team.

Dad Neil also coached and managed Bashley's junior teams for many years, and the whole family was involved in the preparation for the Family Fun Day on August Bank Holiday Monday

In the week following the second consecutive Fun day wash-out, Libby came to the Club Committee with a proposal... a fund-raising swim on behalf of the Club - a distance equivalent to the length of the River Thames, 214 miles in total over the winter season.

Libby is an experienced and enthusiastic, endurance swimmer : in 2012 she swam a mile for every day that the Princess of Wales Regiment served in Afghanistan to raise money for injured servicemen; in 2013 she completed a Cross Channel charity swim with a group of students from Brockenhurst College.

Now a part-time student in London and a  Life Guard at New Milton, she will spend her weekends and evenings swimming her way, mile by mile, through the distance equivalent to the length of the River Thames. All on behalf this time of Bashley ( Rydal) Cricket Club.
And she is already  almost 10 miles into the challenge

In the next few weeks, we hope to be able to bring you news of an opportunity for the Junior Cricketers to join Libby in the pool, and participate in their own right in this fantastic challenge.....

In the meantime, we are sharing the link to the Club's Just Giving Page, which has been set up for this event, and where Libby explains why she is taking this on.
We hope that you will support Libby in this challenge, and encourage others to do the same.....

Bashley U15 secure their spot at Home Finals Day

In an exciting last-match scramble for points at the top of the U15 league table, Bashley (Rydal) U15 have clinched a win at Beaulieu with sufficient points to reclaim to top spot
Bashley went into the match knowing that they needed a win and 16 points to secure the place at the top of the South League.
Despite the loss of an early wicket and some very economic bowling from Beaulieu’s M. Pooley, Bashley’s batsmen found their form and batted steadily, securing a final score of 157 for 2, (equating to 6 batting points) and solid performances from J. Gaunt ( 32), M. Clark ( 42 retired), J. Harris ( 37 not out) and T. Saunders ( 20 not out)
In reply, Beaulieu’s openers batted confidently, holding pace with the run rate initially. Eventually, the breakthrough came : a stunning one-handed catch followed by 2 wickets for J. Gaunt, and wickets from T. Saunders, S. Presland, Chloe-Ann Anderson, E. Whiting and D. Hart held Beaulieu to 79 for 9 after the full 18 overs.
Full credit to Beaulieu U15 for their sportsmanship in being supported by some younger players.
So with 19 points from the match, Bashley’s average  returned them to the top of the table, and they now progress to the League Play-offs being hosted at Bashley this coming Sunday.
We are delighted to have one of our Junior Squads represented at Finals Day. Well done Guys and Girls !

Tips from the Top

Dan Friedman     Capt President's Cup Team ,    Wicket Keeper, bowler & batsman

(Photo: Terry Nash)

Dan's tip to our juniors is:

Always watch the ball into your gloves. As soon as you take your eyes off the ball there is a good chance that your hands will be in the wrong place. When standing up to the wicket try and keep your hands on the ground for as long as possible (preferably until the ball has pitched). As wicketkeepers we need to avoid coming up too early as it is much easier for your gloves to be low and rise with the ball, rather than coming up early and having to drop them back down.

Remember, you will make mistakes, we all do – but when you do just remember this quote from former England Wicketkeeper Alan Knott ‘Don’t let missed chances affect your performance...the next ball is the only one that matters’

Dan originates from South Africa. He has played cricket at Bashley since 2006
He is able to keep wicket, bowl and bat !
Dan and Kerrie returned to South Africa earlier this year to get married , but live locally
This year, Dan has captained Bashley's highly successful President's Cup Team

Congratulations on both counts, Dan !

Perfect Performance from the Lewis Brothers !

Bashley U17 were in action again last night for their second fixture against OTs & Romsey this season, this time one of our few league fixtures.

OTs & Romsey set off with strong batting performances (H. Tulk retiring on 51) before Bashley's luck changed and wickets started to fall. OT's & Romsey finished the innings setting a huge target  of 150 for Bashley to chase .

Bashley's reply came in the form of the Lewis brothers, with Marcus retiring with a 6 on 55, and Patrick retiring on 50. With the scores getting close, unfortunately Bashley lost a couple of quick wickets and ran out of overs, finishing at 132 for 4

A great match, played in great spirit by both teams

The U17 squad have not had the easiest of seasons - despite the team being ready to go most weeks, throughout the district this age group has been decimated by exams affecting player's availability. Matches have been cancelled at the 11th hour, or dropped out of the fixture list through clubs having to withdraw completely.
Despite the lack of U17 cricket we are delighted that most of the squad are regulars in the seniors teams every weekend, so we look forward to some more great performances throughout the summer !

New Zealand's Luke Ronchi Drops in at Bashley

New Zealand International Cricketer, Luke Ronchi came back to  Bashley Rydal CC on Saturday to visit his old club and team mates.  Luke spent 3 seasons with Bashley Rydal CC as their overseas player arriving as a teenager in 1999, and has continued to maintain links with the club and its members
Arriving at lunchtime, Luke spent the afternoon catching up with club members and former team-mates, and watching the Bashley Rydal 2nd XI in action. He also chatted with some of Bashley’s young cricketers who were practicing in the nets, answering their questions about wicket keeping and life as an International cricketer. He told them that his favourite shot is the pull shot – but he also likes a good cover drive !

He spent the afternoon and evening at the club, before returning to Southampton ready for his international duty on Sunday in the England V New Zealand ODI at the Ageas Bowl.

Bashley Welcomes Littlewick Green CC touring team

It had been planned since the Springtime, but as the heavens opened early on Friday afternoon, our hearts sank. However, the weather gods were kind on this occasion ( along with a little forward thinking the previous evening from the grounds staff who had covered the wicket !). A drying breeze, and by late afternoon, we had sunshine too... and were all set to welcome a touring team to Bashley.

Littlewick Green CC U11 were on tour, camping in the New Forest and visiting Bashley on Friday evening and Sway CC on Saturday morning.

Bashley U11ready for action !

A Twenty20 match, played using pairs format cricket and 2 teams of 10. A beautiful sunny evening, a friendly bunch of young cricketers and a very exciting match, with Bashley clinching a win by just 5 runs in the final over.

A superb team effort, great fun and both teams a real credit to their respective clubs.
We hope that Littlewick Green will come and see us again

Bashley U12 Indoor Squad - Finals Day

Having gone through the regular season unbeaten Bashley arrived at Finals day in confident mood. But their opponents Wimborne & Colehill A had proved tough opposition in the group and it was a surprise to see them coming in as the 4th placed team. The omens looked good with Bashley batting first for the 7th consecutive match and the opening pair of Dan Bailey  and Josh Royan getting the lads off to a flyer. Bailey (44) in particular was in sparkling form with 3 trademark straight drives to the back boundary bringing an early retirement. But consistent bowling from Wimborne & Colehill began to peg Bashley back and when Royan fell just short of retirement to a sharp stumping the battle between bat and ball became a tightly contested affair in the middle overs. Toby Mills played nicely taking the limited opportunities on offer, accompanied by Sam Presland and Joshua Bailey, but there were few extras and limited buffet bowling on offer to help the lads accelerate the run rate. Scott Menary did well to add useful runs at the death in a late flurry with the returning Dan Bailey but 121 looked as if it it might be a tough total to defend.

When the sides changed over Bashley needed a good start and the opening duo of Josh Royan and Joshua Bailey restricted the Wimborne openers in the early going. However it was always likely that the boys were going to have to take wickets to win the match and they proved frustratingly difficult to come by. In previous matches the ball almost seemed magnetically attracted the Bashley fielders but today it seemed to always be a foot one side or the other or the ball would magically go over middle stump rather than catching the bails. Captain Royan marshaled his field inventively and juggled the bowling order to keep Bashley in the game whilst Mills was a reassuring presence behind the stumps. A smart catch by Presland and two run outs gave Bashley an outside chance but ultimately Wimborne just had too much for them on the day reaching the required total with 5 balls to spare.

Confirmation of how strong a side Wimborne were came just an hour later in the final when they demolished Parley, second semi final winners, for 46 with Wimborne reaching that total without losing a wicket themselves.

The Bashley boys, including Jack Harris and Will Syms who would have come in for the final if we had progressed, have much to be proud of in going unbeaten through the league season and conducting themselves with great skill and spirit. It has been a pleasure to be involved with this team and to have had great support from the parents throughout. I wish all the boys well for the summer season and very much hope we can pick up where we left off again next winter.

Report by Graham Presland

Many thanks to Graham for all his hard work during the indoor season

Coaching Junior Cricket at Bashley:

We are working hard to develop strong links at Bashley (Rydal) CC between the Senior and Junior Club sections, because we are, at the end of the day, one club. We’ve been really thrilled over the last couple of years with the number of the Senior Bashley players who coach the juniors, and also with the number of older “juniors” who are also helping with the younger juniors and starting out on the coaching pathway.
We believe this strengthens the feeling of “being a club”, but also hugely benefits the junior cricketers with the enthusiasm of the seniors for the club, and puts “names to faces” for the juniors. We hope that this will increase the interest amongst the Junior section to come and watch some seniors in action, and support them in key matches such as T20 cup matches

So, to all those U9s and U11s who marvel at the amazing ‘tricks’ from the coaches during winter training….. did you know that most of them were once Bashley U9s and U11s themselves?
Here are some of them in action... See who you recognise……

Some-one's first match ever !

( Clues : Josh, Simon, Ryan , Marcus & Tom..... not in that order !)

We are also delighted that 5 of our current U15s and U17s also completed a course for Young Leaders in Cricket in February, and have also been helping out with the Junior training.
So thank you so far to all our coaches and helpers, and we look forward to more fun with them all once the outdoor training starts next week......  (more details to follow)

Bashley U12 Indoor Squad on finish on Top - 6 wins out of 6 !

We are delighted to report that the boys finished the group stages of Div 1 of the U12 Dorset indoor league in some style, making in 6 wins out of 6 against a spirited Bournemouth Eagles team. With Bashley batting first again Joshua (25 no) and Daniel (26 no) Bailey set the most solid of platforms for the innings by both stroking their way to retirement seemingly untroubled.

Scott Menary (8) looked to be growing in confidence until a promising knock was prematurely brought to an end a touch unluckily by run out. Will Syms (23 no) was soon dusting off any early season rust with some robust hitting and Jack Harris (9) looked to pick up the pace towards the end of the innings, whilst Sam Presland (10 no) helped scamper the total up to a very respectable 168-2 at the close.

After the changeover the Eagles were soon brought down to earth by a solid Bashley bowling performance and some excellent individual fielding. A nice catch off the wall by Sam from the bowing of Will started the rot and was followed shortly after by Joshua pocketing a wonderful caught and bowled in the very next over from a powerful Eagles drive. Daniel and Scott kept the Eagles on the back foot with some steady bowling before Sam and Jack combined to generate a fine stumping of the Bournemouth no.4. Three late run outs (two from direct hits from Sam and Daniel) closed out the innings off at 112 all out.

So the final league table tells a happy tale for the Bashley U12 boys http://www.dorsetcricketboard.co.uk/node/1549 and congratulations to all of the boys for a campaign of sustained excellence.

Thank you also to Graham Presland for running the indoor squad.

Onwards to finals day.......

Bashley Indoor U12 squad v Hamworthy. Dorset Indoor League

Bashley U12s kept up their winning run with victory over Hamworthy in their latest indoor fixture without quite hitting the heights of recent performances. Batting first for the fifth consecutive match Sam Presland (37 no) and Jack Harris (16) got the boys off to a solid start until Presland retired and Harris fell to a good delivery. The county duo of Daniel Bailey and Joshua Royan looked to pick up the pace but Royan (12) was unfortunate to be run out before Bailey drove his way to a retirement. Unselfish late order contributions from Scott Menary (5) and Toby Mills (9) before a late flurry at the death from retirees Presland and Bailey enabled Bashley to reach a respectable 163-4.

After the changeover Joshua Royan struck immediately but in the early going Bashley were just a touch off with the ball and Hamworthy road their luck with multiple edges not going to hand and sharp chances put down.  But just as its seemed a tight conclusion might be on the cards Bashley found their form and tight bowling from Bailey was backed up with renewed standards in the field with a slew of wickets including 2 quick thinking runouts, a stumping from Harris and a fine catch from Royan reducing to Hamworthy to 116 all out.

So with one game remaining Bashley look set to go into Finals day seeded no.1 with an unassailable points total. So well done to the boys and we will look to finish the regular season undefeated with our final group match against Bournemouth Eagles on March 13th.

U12 Indoor Squad: New Year starts with an emphatic win !

Dorset Indoor League : U12

Bashley 155 for 2; Ellingham 41 all out.

Well what a performance that was from the boys last night which saw them sweep a talented Ellingham team aside and move to the top of Indoor Division 1!  Captain Josh Royan won the toss and decided to bat and he and Joshua Bailey got Bashley immediately on the front foot with some powerful hitting before Royan (17) nicked a good one to the the keeper. Bailey (33 no) and Toby Mills (25 no) consolidated that good start both retiring deservedly unbeaten. Sam Presland helped maintain the momentum with some good scampering between the wickets before Mills was joined by Jack Harris (27 no) and they played very sensibly together to ensure that Bashley used their full allocation of 12 overs to reach a good total of 155-2 against a useful Ellingham attack.

Keeping up the high standard of recent matches Bashley were again electrifying in the field. Sam Presland took a nice catch to dismiss the Ellingham no.1 for a duck, when he was deceived by a nicely flighted delivery from Joshua Bailey. Josh Royan immediately put the pressure on by only conceding one scoring shot from the bat in his opening 2 overs and picking up a nice caught and bowled as his reward. Sharp work from Jack Harris behind the stumps accounted for Ellinghams no.3 off the bowling of Bailey and Bashley were truly on top. Scott Menary's accurate opening over then saw him tempt the batsman into a powerful lofted drive that was plucked out of the air brilliantly by Royan who in the same over ran out another batsman with an accurate throw, just for good measure! It then just remained for Presland to perform the last rights on the Ellingham innings with the 1st ball of the 6th over castling the stumps  and bringing the Ellingham innings to a close at 41 all out.

So a comprehensive win and a great evenings entertainment for all the Mum's and Dads watching and I was delighted that again all 6 boys contributed to an excellent team performance. Bashley can move forward with confidence towards their next fixture in 2 weeks time against Hamworthy.
